L.E.G.I.O.N. '94 #70

L.E.G.I.O.N. '94 #70 (September 1994)
writer: Tom Peyer
penciller: Arnie Jorgenson & Derec Aucoin
inker: James Pascoe
colors: Gene D'Angelo
letters: Gaspar Saladino
editor: Dan Raspler
cover: Barry Kitson

Reviewer: Mike "Nostalgic Kid" Lane

Recap: After discovering that Bek stowed away aboard their ship, Marij'n was furious that he ruined her romantic trip with Comet. Lady Quark was dispatched by Dox to retrieve Bek but was attacked by a powerful duplicate of herself. The being appeared to kill Lady Quark and leave her body floating in space as it departed for Ith'kaa to complete her mission. She arrived and demanded Bek's return. Although they agreed, she lost patience with how slowly they were moving and ended up in battle with Comet, which appeared to end with his death in a cave-in.

Telepath discovered that Lady Quark has been replaced but the new "Dark" Lady Quark threatened his life so he agreed to keep her secret. Marij'n tried to convince everyone that Lady Quark murdered Comet, but no one believed her and Telepath avoided her so she could not ask him to probe Quark's mind. Although they held a funeral for Comet, he was still alive and dug his way out of the cave-in, although no one is aware of that yet.

Dox revealed his infant son's super intelligence to everyone and named him as Bek's replacement as Chief Administrator. The child, who took the name Lyrl, assumed Bek's duties and began to act suspiciously. He exerted some sort of mind control over Lydia Mallor and slowly started to undermine his father's command.  After the L.E.G.I.O.N. rescued the natives of Argo-Prime, the government of Cairn agreed to let them resettle on their world. Unfortunately, tension quickly developed between the new immigrants and the native population. Dox's son, Lyrl, exploited this tension and caused a riot. He also ordered L.E.G.I.O.N. troops to shoot to kill the Argites and arranged for them to be blamed in the press. When Dox learned what happened, he immediately knew his son was responsible. Before he could take action, Lyrl used a broadcast to place most of L.E.G.I.O.N. under his control, including most of the newer recruits.

Meanwhile, Jo Nah, also known as Ultra Boy from the Legion of Super-Heroes, appeared to take Phase back to the future. He initially thought she was Phantom Girl, but discovered that she was actually her cousin, Enya Wazzo. He still invited her to return with him so that they can learn the fate of her cousin together.

The Last League of Infinity story

Supreme #55 (November 1997)
“Silence at Gettysburg”
Written by: Alan Moore
Art: Chris Sprouse, Gil Kane, Al Gordon

This is the final story review in the “League of Infinity” series.  Unlike the earlier three, which were short, light tales, this story is a full book-length story in a far, far more serious vein.

For those of us who are just joining us, the “League of Infinity” was (were?) the “Supreme” universe's answer to the Legion of Super-Heroes and were recruited from different times rather than different planets.

To check out their three earlier appearances,  click on the Alan Moore label below this post.

The Legion on Super-Team Family The Lost Issues

Imagine living in a world where all comic characters were “under one roof,” where you could walk into a comic store and find a book in which your favorite characters could team up or battle without regard for who owns what.

Well, we don’t live in that world, but we can get a tantalizing peek at what it might look like thanks to Ross Pearsall over at https://braveandboldlost.blogspot.com/.

He takes characters and situations from all of the major comic book companies, puts them in the blender and creates some pretty tasty concoctions, And he puts a new one up every freakin’ day!  Iron Man meets Green Lantern.  The Justice League battles Ultron. Adam Strange and Doctor Strange (Long-lost brothers).  And one of my personal faves, The Creeper versus The Green Goblin.

And it isn’t just the “big boys” you’ll find here.  No character or book is too obscure to escape Ross’s treatment.  The X-Files and Swamp Thing.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Vampirella. Quantum Leap and Sliders.

Some of the covers are laugh-out-loud funny.  Others make you wish that you could actually read the darn story.  But this is, after all, a Legion of Super-Heroes site.  So let’s look at some of his Legion-related covers....starting with one from last March, which inspired this article: The Legion vs. The Avengers! I'd buy that for a dollar all right!

On Cairn, Garv was fighting crime as a vigilante named the Masked Avenger. He attempted to capture some muggers but was knocked unconscious. Fortunately, Strata arrived to help, but in disguise as a masked hero named Leather Rose so he did not recognize her. Eventually, he succeeded in taking down the criminal gang and she mentioned that she was in search of a man named Garv. He finally realized it was Strata under the mask and hugged her. He was overjoyed to see her and immediately proposed marriage, which she appeared to accept.
