Recap: Vril Dox crash-landed on Earth while fleeing from a group of mercinaries, which included former L.E.G.I.O.N. recruit, Amon Haak. With Supergirl's assistance, he fled to a science station at the South Pole. There, he received a message through time from his descendant, Brainiac 5, who explained that there was no record in his era of Vril Dox after this day. To ensure his survival, Brainiac 5 provided him with the complete personnel files of the Legion of Super-Heroes to maximize his chances. Instead of recruiting Supergirl, as Brainiac 5 expected, Vril Dox stole a device from the mercenary Getorix that gave him control over the giant beast, Tribulus. He then travelled to Starhaven, home of the Anasazi Tribe of Earth, who had long ago been abducted by aliens and resettled. There, he recruited the outcast native, Wildstar, and used technology to awaken the latent tracking talents of her people.  Unfortunately, the effects of the process mean that she must now wear a special containment suit for the rest of her life.  They then travelled to the planet Cairn in hopes of recruiting former L.E.G.I.O.N. officer, Strata, and discover that she just survived an attack by L.E.G.I.O.N. robo-troops.

Who's Who in the Legion #1 EXTRAS

Although we have already featured all of the characters that actually appeared in the mini-series Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes (1988), we here at Legion of Super-Bloggers realized that we never got around to featuring the extra-special features from each issue, such as the history of the Legion from issues 1 & 2, the Legion planet featurette from issue 3, the Legion HQ tour from issue 4, etcetera! So here we are in seven part min-series to rectify this mistake!  

We'll start off with the first part of "The History of the Legion" from Who's Who in the Legion #1.

Supergirl stumbled upon their battle and Dox convinced her to help him. Elsewhere, the Omega Men were being pursued by L.E.G.I.O.N. peacekeeper robo-troops at the colony on Lunestus, and Tygor wondered why the L.E.G.I.O.N. would even be paying attention to such a small community. Then they received a L.E.G.I.O.N. broadcast announcing that all member worlds were now considered L.E.G.I.O.N. property and that a reward was being offered for the capture of Vril Dox. On Earth, Supergirl took Dox to a remove outpost at the South Pole, where he received a message from his descendant, Brainiac 5.

When the Legion of Super-Heroes were introduced in Adventure Comics #247 back in April 1958, it was intended to be your typical one-and-done kind of story. But if there was one thing that the DC writing staff was known for, it was recycling story elements as part of the Superman mythology. Indeed, they would recycle whole stories on occasion, as I have commented on here. So, once the Legion was established it was inevitable that they would return. But what was not inevitable was that they would, over time, develop a mythology of their own as broad and deep as the one that originated them. As the manifest of this page tells us, it takes a Legion to create it. A Legion of Super Writers, if you will...

Recap: In the prior series, Vril Dox, the super-intelligent founder of the interplanetary police agency L.E.G.I.O.N., became a fugitive from his own organization. His infant son, Lryl Dox, also possessed super-intelligent and created a brainwashing device to take over the organization. Eventually, with the help of fellow fugitives and former L.E.G.I.O.N. officers Stealth, Telepath, Phase, Borb Borbb, Strata, and Garv, Vril was able to free everyone from the brainwashing and regain leadership.

Vril retired from L.E.G.I.O.N. and settled on a small asteroid base with his son, who had been reverted to a normal child, and the boy's mother, Stealth. He handed leadership over to Captain Comet of Earth, who vowed to rebuild the galaxy's trust in L.E.G.I.O.N.
