Happy Birthday, Steve Lightle!
Today is the birthday of extraordinary Legion artist Steve Lightle, born on this date in 1959.
Steve's first published work was in the DC New Talent Showcase in early 1984. Then he worked on a few World's Finest stories, and then he was given Legion of Super-Heroes (volume three). From there he worked on The Doom Patrol (with Paul Kupperberg) and then moved to Marvel, where he drew Wolverine, Ghost Rider, and various other characters for Marvel Comics Presents. Besides these regular art assignments, he is well known as a cover artist, most notably for his long work on The Flash.
In fact, Steve was the regular Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 3) cover artist for several years in the late Eighties, even after he left as the regular interior artist. Several years later, he was the regular cover artist for LSH (volume 7) for a run in 2012-2013. There are too many to show ALL of his great covers here, so please enjoy some of my favorite Legions!
You can find Steve Lightle original art and other stuff for sale at his site Lunatick Press.
Steve's very FIRST Legion cover...! (1985) |
Classic poster of the Founders...! |
You can almost FEEL the heat radiating off this one...! |
Steve did a great job on the Silver Age Legion, too! |
As of today, Steve's LATEST Legion cover....! (2013) |
I've always dug his work. So classy and exciting at the same time. He did a pin-up in a Spider-Man poster book, and I consider that one of the best images of the character ever put to paper.
