Happy Birthday, Dave Cockrum!

Today would have been the 73rd birthday of extraordinary Legion artist Dave Cockrum, who was born on this date in  1943.

Does anyone who reads comics not know who Dave Cockrum is? I'm afraid that since he died in 2006, knowledge of his work is fading. So to help remind people of who Dave Cockrum is and how important he was to comics, here are but a FEW of the countless Dave Cockrum accomplishments!

Happy Birthday, Magnetic Kid!

According to the 2995 LSH Sourcebook, today will be the birthday of Pol Krinn, better known throughout the galaxy as Magnetic Kid.
Magnetic Kid was one of the last new Legionnaires to join during the so-called "Original Age." He served for nearly two years before the Magic Wars began, and he sacrificed himself to help end the conflict.
Because Magnetic Kid is no longer with us, he doesn't have a horoscope. Instead, let's look at how each of the Legion artists illustrated this brave young man...

Happy Birthday Keith Giffen!

Happy Birthday Keith Giffen!

Giffen has been a major creative force with the Legion for the last three decades and I have appreciated all he has done for the team throughout the years. One of the things that amazes me is that Giffen has been around long enough and I have been a fan long enough to see first hand his art change over the years.

Happy Birthday, Tyroc!

According to the  2995 Legion of Super-Heroes Sourcebook, today will be the birthday of Legion of Super-Heroes member Tyroc.
Tyroc was the hero of the island of Marzal when he met the Legion in its ninth year. Originally he held the Legion in disdain, but when he saw for himself their honesty and bravery, he realized that his suspicions were based on antiquated ideas. When the Legion asked him to join, he accepted, becoming Legionnaire #21. However he had served less than two years before Marzal shifted back to its original dimension, and he decided to return with it.

Tyroc is a Sagittarius. Once he establishes his standards, he will live up to them...and so will those around him. Each choice he makes to improve his health and vitality will greatly enhance his  personal life.

As an extra bonus, here's the final appearance of Tyroc in Legion continuity, as he says good-bye to Dawnstar and Shadow Lass as he sends them back to "our" dimensional world.

Happy Birthday, Paul Levitz!

Happy Birthday, Paul Levitz!

Today is the birthday of extraordinary Legion writer Paul Levitz, born on this date in 1956.

Paul's first Legion story was in Superboy/Legion #225 (March 1977). It was noteworthy for being the issue after Jim Shooter and Mike Grell had both left the title. It was not an auspicious beginning, as many fans were against new artist Jim Sherman and many also preferred the established writing style of Jim Shooter....Levitz had Mon-El *slap* Superboy in this story, for crying out loud!

Happy Birthday, White Witch!

According to the 2995 LSH Sourcebook, today will be the birthday of Mysa, better known throughout the galaxy as The White Witch.

White Witch joined the Legion during their most dangerous adventure: The Great Darkness! As Dream Girl's younger sister, she had already met many of the Legionnaires. So when they asked her to join, she was happy to expand her experiences with them. She served until a discussion of morality during the trial of Brainiac 5 caused her to return to the Sorcerers' World. She returned to the Legion after the events of the Magic Wars.

White Witch is a Virgo. What was complicated becomes super-simple today. It's all cause and effect. Everything she needs is in her realm. All she has to do is choose.

As an extra bonus, here's the scene where White Witch creates a Boom Tube of her own so that the Legion can bring the battle TO Darkseid!  (Legion of Super-Heroes (v2) #294 with art by Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt)

Happy Birthday, Invisible Kid (II)!

According to the 2995 LSH Sourcebook, today will be the birthday of Jacques Foccart, better known throughout the galaxy as the second Invisible Kid.
Invisible Kid joined the Legion in its eleventh year as Legionnaire #32. He served with valor until the events of the Magic Wars.
Invisible Kid is a Virgo. The surface of things will tell one story, but the whole story will require more effort. When they know you are really interested, they will want to tell you the truth.

As an extra bonus, here's the scene where Invisible Kid decided to embrace his destiny and remain as a Legionnaire. Originally he took the invisibility serum out of necessity to try to save his sister's life, but here he chooses to keep his powers rather than give them up. Happy Birthday, Dick Giordano!

Happy Birthday, Dick Giordano!

Tomorrow July 20 is the birthday of extraordinary penciller, inker, editor, and all-around-good-guy Dick Giordano, born on this date in  1932.

Dick first broke into comics at Charlton Comics in the mid Sixties as an editor. During his tenure there he worked with such talent as Jim Aparo, Denny O'Neil, and Steve Skeates. In 1968 he was hired by DC Comics, and brought several of these talented gentlemen with him. He was initially the editor of titles such as Aquaman and Teen Titans, as well as the inker for Neal Adams on several classic Batman stories. Later still, he became the editor of the Batman titles, then the entire DC line. He retired from DC in 1993.

Happy Birthday, Clark Kent!

According to the 1976 DC Calendar, today is the birthday of Clark Kent. It is the anniversary of the date that the rocket-ship carrying baby Kal-El arrived on Earth. For the rest of their lives, Martha and Jonathan celebrated this day as the date their son came into their lives.

That makes Clark Kent a Gemini. Buttering someone up to get what you want isn't necessarily an evil manipulation. Sweetness, kindness, flattery, and smooth handling might be what's required to make things fit together.

According to the 1976 DC Calendar, today will be the birthday of Salu Digby, better known throughout the galaxy as Shrinking Violet.

Happy Birthday, Dawnstar!

According to the 2995 LSH Sourcebook, today will be the birthday of Dawnstar of Starhaven.
Dawnstar was originally a professional guide, tracker, and bounty hunter before being brought into the Legion. She served for more than five years, until the Magic Wars changed the universe completely.

Dawnstar is an Aries. She knows that it's love when she doesn't have to do much other than be together to have a special time. The humor you share is part of what makes it great. It's easy to be funny when you're this comfortable.
