A Tale of Two Legions

Join us as two of the Legion of Super-Bloggers rant about what makes a good comic-book in general and a good Legion comic in particular.

We look at two very recent examples of TWO new Legion of Super-Heroes stories.

One is of course, LSH (volume 8) #5, which had been released during the same week that retail stores were ordered closed. The other was From Beyond The Unknown #1 (direct market version).

Although both series are called "Legion of Super-Heroes," it is no Sophie's Choice to tell you which one we would save in a fire.

LSH (v8) #2

Legion of Super-Heroes #2 (February 2020)
title: (Untitled)
writer: Brian Michael Bendis
penciller: Ryan Sook
inker: Ryan Sook and Wade Von Grawbadger
colorist: Jordie Bellaire
letterer: Dave Sharpe
associate editor: Brittany Holzherr
editor: Brian Cunningham
covers: Ryan Sook (main); Jim Cheung & Tomeu Morey (variant)

reviewers: Russell "Bilingual Boy" Burbage and Mike "Nostalgic Kid" Lane

Mission Monitor Board:
It's hard to list who had a role in this story, because it was another example of "let's have everyone in the scenes but only identify the main ten or so characters."
Here are the characters who were identified or had speaking parts, in (kind of) order of their appearance: Cosmic Boy, Timber Wolf, Brainiac 5, Ultra Boy, Superboy, Lighting Lad, Triplicate Girl, Wildfire, Blok, Mon-El, White Witch, and a female Legionnaire who had many lines but who was never introduced who I am assuming was Phantom Girl. Also recognizable were Element Lad, Colossal Boy, Dawnstar, Chameleon Boy, and Bouncing Boy

Supporting Characters:
Rose Forrest, MadamHonor President Brande, Robin the Boy Wonder

Opponents:
the Horraz, bad writers, worse editors

LSH (v8) #1

Legion of Super-Heroes #1 (January 2020)
title: "The Legion of Super-Heroes!"
writer: Brian Michael Bendis
penciller: Ryan Sook
inker: Ryan Sook and Wade Von Grawbadger
colorist: Jordie Bellaire
letterer: Dave Sharpe
associate editor: Brittany Holzherr
editor: Brian Cunningham
covers: Ryan Sook (main); Ryan Sook and Jim Cheung & Romulo Fajardo, Jr (variants)

reviewers: Russell "Bilingual Boy" Burbage, with Jason "Anachronistic Kid" Knol and Siskoid

Mission Monitor Board:
There is no "let's introduce ourselves" scene so we'll mention only the members who are clearly identifiable, or who identify themselves: Superboy, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Brainiac 5; Karate Kid, Ultra Boy, Wildfire, Star Boy (who doesn't introduce himself, but who is called out by name by Karate Kid); in the last "group shot", I count 31 members.

Opponents:
Mordru, the Horraz, time-travel overwhelmingness, badly plotted stories

Millenium: Legion of Super-Heroes #2

Legion of Super-Heroes: Millenium #2 (Dec 2019)
title: "...And Then"
writer: Brian Michael Bendis
credited on the cover (but not in the issue):
Scott, Cheung, Dekal, Sook, Morey, Bellaire
covers: Ryan Sook (main); Ivan Reis/Joe Prado (variant)

reviewer: Russell "Bilingual Boy" Burbage

Mission Monitor Board:
Thirty-two members if I counted correctly (not counting the triplets individually). I didn't notice a Dr. Fate type character appearing before. And there is a Dr. Phosphorus type character in the rear on the left as well. And Invisible Kid seems to be a member, although we don't (ahem) see him.
Opponent:
Time-travel glitches, stupid human decisions that lead to Great Disasters, stupid corporate decisions that lead to $4.99 comic books not being worth the price of admission

Summary:
Rose and the Thorn, a Bronze Age Superman Family character, is jumping through different time periods until she arrives on the day the Legion of Super-Heroes has formed. She asks for their help. The end.
