Remembering Dave Cockrum

Happy Birthday, Dave Cockrum!

Today would have been the 73rd birthday of extraordinary Legion artist Dave Cockrum, who was born on this date in  1943.

Does anyone who reads comics not know who Dave Cockrum is? I'm afraid that since he died in 2006, knowledge of his work is fading. So to help remind people of who Dave Cockrum is and how important he was to comics, here are but a FEW of the countless Dave Cockrum accomplishments!

Fourteen (count 'em, 14!) of these Legionnaires' looks were designed by Dave!

Wildfire was created by Dave.
He's one of the most popular and easily recognizable Legionnaires of all time...!

Dave LOVED the old Captain Marvel, Jr. stories, especially those by Mac Raboy

Dave helped Len Wein & Chris Claremont put together the All-New X-Men.
He created Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus,
and helped develop Wolverine, Banshee, and Phoenix!

I'm waiting for this iconic image to make it onto a t-shirt. It shouldn't be too long now....

Dave re-designed Ms. Marvel in what everyone (?) considers her best outfit

Dave created his own group, The Futurians.

I have seen this Hulk image on a t-shirt

I bought an Avengers t-shirt partly *because* Dave's Hawkeye was used.

Dave was a huge Star Trek fan.
He worked on the comic-book series for both Marvel and DC.

Dave was a huge Star Wars fan, too.
He did several pieces while the property was at Marvel.

Happy Birthday, Dave Cockrum!
We miss you....

  3. I loved that Shi'ar-esque costume he gave Vi. It's the best one she's had.

  6. Dave did one of the very first gatherings of super teams in a single image in Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes #200. Not only was the piece mishandled by relegating it into a single page (should have been a double-page spread), but his editor wouldn't let him keep the piece (this was just as Marvel was returning original art to their artists and before it had been firmly established that the work was legally the property of the artist). He left for Marvel as a result. I've restored and preserved the image on my Dave Cockrum page: www.metropolisplus.com/LOSH
