Who's Who: Zymyr

Zymyr
by Russell & Siskoid

Real Name: Zymyr
Super-Power(s): Telepathy; evil scientist
Planet of Origin: Gil'Dishpan
Relationship to Legion: Villain; member of the Legion of Super-Villains

Legion Log
Zymyr first appeared as a member of Nemesis Kid's Legion of Super-Villains. He was instrumental in their plot to kidnap Orando and move it to another dimension. Zymyr provided the required space warp technology, so advanced that even Brainiac 5 could not figure out how it worked.

When their plan was stopped and the majority of LSV members were captured by the Legion, Zymyr managed to use his space warp ability to escape. He returned to his home, an uncharted world that he had taken control of and was using as his own personal science lab, complete with menagerie and robotic assembly line.

When the Legion attempted to track down Zymyr, they learned his history. He was from the planet Gil'dishpan, noteworthy as a brilliant scientist from a planet of geniuses. Zymyr had been exiled due to his unethical experiments on "lower species." His exile brought him into contact with members of the Legion of Super-Villains, and offered the possibility of unfettered scientific experiments on Orando, he gladly joined that group.

The next time the Legion encountered Zymyr he was assisting Universo in the latter's plan to take over Earth. At this time Tellus explained that the Gil'dishpan race was instrumental in helping his people advance, teaching them about space travel and the universe outside their Mother Ocean. Unfortunately, the Gil'dishpan are a race of pompous egotists who look down on all other races. As an example, Tellus showed his friends a statue of a Gil'dishpan scientist erected (by them) in his planet's capital city.

It turned out that Zymyr was sent to Tellus' home planet of Hykraius to use his space warp abilities to kidnap Science Police officers. When Zymyr was discovered, he dispatch Tellus and the White Witch to debilitating atmospheres in order to make them more susceptible to Universo's mind control while siccing robots against Quislet and Wildfire. After providing Universo with these four Legionnaires, Zymyr escaped capture again.

Nearly a year later, while on an errand of mercy on Magnetic Kid's home planet of Braal, he, Lightning Lass, and Tellus encountered another criminal Gil'dishpan. His name was Hywyndr, who appeared to have the ability to control winds when in contact with Braal's land. The Legionnaires managed to capture him when they whisked him off-planet, depriving him of his power source.

Zymyr and Hywyndr, like all natives of Gil'dishpan, breathe methane instead of oxygen. They must remain inside their traveling space bubble in order to live.

Zymyr is not seen after the so-called Five-Year Gap, nor after the Reboot or Threeboot.

After Infinite Crisis, Zymyr's original history has presumably been more or less restored. During the so-called Final Crisis, he joined Superboy-Prime's Legion of Super-Villains, then later, Saturn Queen's, taking the latter to other dimensions where she could spread chaos; for example, by destroying the Rock of Eternity. He is currently in custody after the Legion defeated that version of the LSV.

  1. Quite possibly the nastiest things Phantom Girl has ever done or said "Don't be rushing off... at least not before I use my powers to give you a little.... farewell caress. " So cool, so badass. She had clearly had enough of that little worm.

    1. Yes, that scene between Zymyr and Phantom Girl is one of the highlights in a book of highlights.

  2. Such a great, truly alien design.
At first I thought that his warping was meant to be alien tech that Brainy didn't understand (and was quite salty about it)
So with the introduction of Hywynder and his different powers made him all the more interesting.
Unfortunately a couple of writers after this it had drifted into an alien racial power and the character became the LSVs chauffeur, which was a bit of a waste.
Still a fun character to have show up and one day I'd love to see the full story behind the G'ldishpan (NOT Gil'dan) and Hykraians.

    1. I totally agree. I really wished there was more explanation as to what the G'ldishpan were. I hoped we would learn more during the visit back to Hykraius, but it was pre-empted by Universo's plot.

  3. Don't Gil'dishpanians also have the power to project acid? I seem to remember that from the Invasion mini-series.
