Dragon Con 2014 - Legion of Super Cosplayers

Howdy Legionnaires! The Irredeemable Shag here to share my latest adventure! Last week I attended Dragon Con, the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe! That's quite a mouthful. To simplify, we call it, "Geek Mardi Gras"!

Over the years Dragon Con has earned the reputation as the premier cosplay convention. Among the 65,000+ attendees, you can't throw a Flight Ring without hitting a cosplayer. This year was no exception!

Today a number of blogs across the interwebs will be featuring various cosplayers from Dragon Con 2014. Here at the Legion of Super Bloggers, we're thrilled to be part of our first multi-blog crossover!

Throughout the convention, I kept my eyes peeled for Legion cosplayers. While at one of the Superhero Costuming Forum photoshoots, I bumped into Brek Bannin (Polar Boy) and Rokk Krinn (Cosmic Boy)! Great costumes and really nice attention to detail!

I was really bummed as I didn't see any additional Legionnaires all weekend. Then when I got home, we stumbled across these next photos on Facebook!! There was a Legion cosplay meet-up, and I missed it?!?! Such a bummer. Check out this fantastic group shot found via Reading with a Flight Ring Facebook group.

When I dug a little deeper, I came across this next funny shot of Superboy being a jerk! Ha! Found via Badger Studios. For more pics from the Legion meet-up, check out Badger Studio's album from August 29. Wildfire even showed up for a few photos!

While at the convention, I also had the good fortune to meet legendary Legion artist, Mike Grell! Such a nice guy! Below is a photo of Mike and I, along with a print I purchased of Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, and Cosmic Boy. Really enjoyed chatting with Mike! Excellent artist, great writer, and all around swell dude!

While my Dragon Con experience was exceptional this year, the rest of my convention adventure was sadly Legion free. Fingers-crossed next year for even more Legion cosplay!

Do I Love the Legion?

Substitute-Blogger: Tim Wallace
Unique power: Fresh eyes and a brain like a pop culture sponge

Let me start out with a confession. I don’t know much about the Legion. Sure I’ve seen them on “Smallville” and “Justice League Unlimited”. I’ve read the entries in “Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe” and even cast my vote for Shadow Lass as the hottest Legionnaire while listening to the Fire and Water Podcast. Truth be told though, I could probably count on my fingers and toes the number of actual Legion comic book issues I own as of this first contribution. Fear not though, gentle reader, like Harold Ramis said in “Stripes”, I’m willing to learn.

Why? Because as unfamiliar with the Legion as I may be…it still holds a special place in my heart. Among the very first comics I bought and collected was the “Legends” crossover miniseries “Cosmic Boy”. This was during my formative early days of collecting and reading comics. When I discovered deep down in my gut that I was a DC Comics fan! Sure Marvel was ok, and there were other independent books I’d read from time to time…but from those early moments on I was a DC guy! (sorry Paul Heyman, lol)

DC comics felt like…home. That might be odd to some, delusional to others, but the universe felt familiar to me, comfortable. Whether it was weird war tales, all star westerns, or my favorite Super Friends, DC was the comics universe that I liked best. And out there on the fringe, beyond the stars, far into the future was a mystery in space, if you will pardon my tongue in cheek rambling…the Legion Of Superheroes!

Their membership is HUGE! Admittedly that has always frightened me a bit. How could anyone keep up? So many members, so many adventures, so much history…it’s enough to scare anyone! But that membership and history are a big part of the DC Universe I know and love. From Superboy, Supergirl and Superman, to Booster Gold and Lobo…quite a few of my favorite characters have crossed paths, in one way or another, with the Legion and thanks to that early purchase of “Cosmic Boy” I’ve never been completely in the dark. I’ve had at least some inkling of the great big beautiful tomorrow that is the 30th Century, and I’ve dipped my toe in the water a few times, here and there…but I never stayed in the pool too long.

So…do I love the Legion? That’s a very good question, and one that I don’t have an answer to just yet. Take the ride with me, learn about these space teens and their cosmic adventures, as I provide a bit of an outsiders perspective. If you have a suggestion for me, an issue or story arc you’d recommend, I’ll be happy to take a look, share my thoughts and we’ll travel into the future together to find out…do I love the Legion?

Art Institue of Zwen: Mike Grell

Another regular feature we are going to have here at Legion of Super Bloggers is The Art Institute of Zwen. This is where we will feature work we love. Sometimes it will be by established artists such as Dave Cockrum, James Sherman, or George Perez. Sometimes it will be independent artists we want to spotlight so we can help get the word out about.

This week we are featuring one of the best-known and greatest Legion artists, "Iron" Mike Grell.

Mike took the art job on Superboy in 1974 because he needed the job, not for any particular love of the characters. However,  in the unenviable position of having to follow fan-favorite Dave Cockrum, Grell took the Legion and for more than three years worked to make it his own. Besides the Legion he is famous for working on Green Lantern-Green Arrow and for creating The Warlord, Jon Sable, Freelance, and wrote Green Arrow for six years. Do you enjoy the TV-series ARROW? That's Mike Grell's GA costume design Oliver is wearing.
You can find Mike Grell at many conventions. He's fun to talk to and will do sketches for you for a price. His traveling schedule can be found here:

Or you can commission him to do original art here:

Legion History Board Game

Confused by the convoluted and intimidating Legion history? Then do we have the game for you!
From the back pages of Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 (2011) comes The Legion History Board Game, with art by the funtastic Brian Douglas Ahern!
...although right off the bat, it's made a mistake. It claims the Legion asked Superboy to join them before Supergirl, but Paul Levitz always postulated that Supergirl joined first...!  Our guess is that Paul didn't write the text here....!

This is the history of the Silver Age-Bronze Age-Adult Legion that was just cancelled when the New 52 series ended. Sadly, this doesn't mention The Zero Hour Reboot or the Supergirl Threeboot, but we'll get to those, too!
So click on these great pages and Colossal Boy 'em up to really enjoy them. Then you'll have yourself  a crash course in what is going on in this continuity!

Hot: Dream Girl in Bed (1)

In one of the more famous panels in Legion history, Dream Girl wakes from a nightmare. The controversy (besides her skimpy sleeping gown) is that lump sleeping next to her, which appears to be Star Boy!

Who's Who: The Legion of Super-Heroes!

Welcome to The Legion of Super Bloggers' "Who's Who of the Legion of Super-Heroes" column!

(I didn't mean *this* type of column...!)

This weekly blog article will go through the ranks of the Legion of Super-Heroes and profile each and every one of the Legionnaires!

We will begin chronologically, with the original Silver Age-Bronze Age characters. We will present their profile pages from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe and then give expanded character histories.

We'll then give you a list of appearances we believe were important to the character, so if you want to read more about, say, Ultra Boy, you'll learn that he died in LSH (vol.2) #275, then came back to life in LSH (vol.2) #282! We hope to create conversations about how great (or not?) these characters are, and compare their greatest and worst moments.

Those characters who "continued" through Five Years Later and the reboots will have their histories profiled here, too. But don't worry, those characters who were brand-new to the Reboot or to the Threeboot will be profiled after we get through what we call "The Original 38."

So strap on your jet pack and adjust your transuit, we'll start with Cosmic Boy next week and won't end until we get to Sensor Girl, 37 weeks from now! By that point we hope you'll have one or two favorites... if you manage to not fall in love with the whole blame group!!

LONG LIVE THE LEGION!

The Baxter Legion aka LSH v3

It was 1984. The vast majority of comic-books were sold in bookstores or on news-stands (Google it) or at places like 7-11. I once bought a Legion comic at Target. But time's they were a'changin. There was suddenly something springing up all over the country called "local comic book stores." This would lead to something called "Direct Only Market."  Books sold directly to the point-of-sale meant no middle-man distributor. No returned covers for unsold books. More profit for the publishers.

DC wanted to get their feet wet with this possible gold mine. So they chose two of their best-selling titles to lead the vanguard by "Going Direct." New Teen Titans and Legion of Super-Heroes would each be split into two separate titles: the ongoing newsprint versions, and a new title with higher-end, better quality paper. This paper was called Baxter paper, and these comics became known as "The Baxter series."

It Takes A Legion....of Super-Bloggers!

Welcome to
The Legion of Super-Bloggers!

Bilingual Boy: Russell Burbage
Unique powers: Super-Editing, Flash Writing, Micro-Detailing, Ultra-Scheduling

Please consider this your pass-key to the magical world that is the Future of the DC Universe. We hope to introduce you to some of our favorite characters, so that they perhaps become some of your favorites, too. If you are already familiar with the Legion of Super-Heroes, we hope to re-introduce you to the magic and wonder, and get you to appreciate again just how cool the DCU future was...er, I mean, WILL BE.

The first Legion of Super-Heroes comic I ever bought was Superboy #212. I happened across it at an airport while I was on my way to a family reunion. I was definitely in the right place at the right time, because although I had been reading comics regularly for about a year at this point, this series was totally new to me. The cover features a dozen characters I had never seen before, telling a shocked Superboy (not SuperMAN?) that they had won the right to take the others' places. I knew this wasn't Nick Cardy or Jim Aparo, the only other two cover artists I was familiar with at this point. All I knew was that I had to have this comic!

Superboy #212 turned out to be the best "jumping on" Legion story I could ever have hoped for. Quick recap: six rejected Legion applicants get together to challenge the right of their countrymen to represent their planets in the Legion. Superboy disapproves, but a battle royal is called for the right to earn Legion membership, winner gets the flight ring. So not only do we get a quick origin of Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl, Chameleon Boy, Shrinking Violet, and Matter-Eater Lad, but we get important Legion lore such as each member is from a different planet, each member has atleast one unique super power, and team-work is what counts most. The story itself was well thought out; let's face it, First Come First Served is not necessarily the best way to pick a super-hero. As I had never heard of any of these six characters, each of them was new and exciting. Re-reading it now, years later after I "know" the characters, it still stands up remarkably well.

The back-up story featured Legionnaires Shadow Lass and Cosmic Boy and his girl-friend, a  non-Legionnaire named Night Girl. In this story, I was introduced to the Legion of Substitute Heroes. Night Girl was super-strong, but only during the dark. She insists on fighting the good fight, even though she would lose her powers at the breaking of dawn. I think I fell in love with both Shadow Lass and Night Girl in this story, and I know I had a man-crush on Cosmic Boy, too. He stuck by his girl-friend, even though she wasn't "good enough" to be a Legionnaire. Talk about a nice guy!

Although the main story was set in the Legion's headquarters, the back-up story is set in and around 30th Century Metropolis. Artist Mike Grell lit a fire in my imagination with his futuristic architecture, space ships, and costumes. This issue served as a gateway to a whole new world of heretofore unknown adventures. Before I read this comic I thought the DCU revolved around Superman and Batman. After reading this issue, I knew that the Legion owned the future.

When I got back to my hometown I tracked down other Superboy/Legion comics and subscribed. For more than 15 years, I never missed an issue. I grew up with the Legion of Super-Heroes.

When Zero Hour started, I made the difficult decision to jump ship. By that point I felt that the stories that were occurring in Legionnaires were re-treads of stories and characters I already knew. Like watching re-makes of favorite movies or TV series cast with new actors, I just didn't want to join in.

Then a few years ago, Geoff Johns brought back "my" Legion. Sure, they were "adult," and bore some resemblance character-wise to the Five Years Later personalities. The tone was darker, but the characters were still identifiable. I bought all the new Legion issues after that. And now, here we are, in a world without any monthly Legion of Super-Heroes series again! For the time being, all we have is the past. The good thing is, where the Legion is concerned, the past is still the future!

So we here at The Legion of Super Bloggers promise to cover all of the different Legion eras and characters. We are working on reviews of each of the different eras, and will post them in chronological order within each series. And we promise to have something NEW every day, so check back often! Here are some of our basic scheduling plans....

Sunday
We will feature some of the greatest art of the greatest characters by the greatest artists. As we don't all agree as to what makes some art "great," this should be a fun column for ALL of us!
Monday
We promise to rotate themes here, with essays on a variety of subjects taking this day. This first month we will introduce each of ourselves and try to explain our love of the Legion (like this one right here!)
Wednesday
As we owe part of our existence to The Fire and Water Family of Pod-casts, specifically The Who's Who Pod-cast, we will feature the classic Who's Who profiles here, one for every Legionnaire until we are through! We will also feature highlights of each characters' history so if you like the character you can try to track down some of his/her best adventures.

Friday
Profiles of HOT Legionnaires. This will go on forever.
Saturday
"Fun" posts for the end of the week. We wrote about the Substitute Heroes last week. You'll never know what to expect on Saturday!

So strap yourself in, cuz The Legion of Super Bloggers is at the controls of this Time Bubble and we're out to have FUN! Onward to the future...!

Unlimited Possibilities- Why I Love The Legion

In the beginning, there was Superman, and he gave way to Superboy. I loved both characters above all others.

But, the tales of the Man of Steel as a lad usually ended up being a smaller-scale version of his adult counter-part.

Until three super-powered teens showed up, and opened the door to a greater universe. Then, there was no going back.

I saw the future, and what a future it was. Filled with aliens, flight rings, and adventures beyond the scope of Smallville.

And, nearly limitless heroes who formed a club, who were friends, sometimes even lovers. Imagine high school on an infinite scale, and everybody could fly. There is no downside to the idea.

When a seed is that potent, it bears amazing fruit. A universe where virtually anything can, and did, happen. The ground is fertile, and the character possibilities nearly write themselves.

The Legion could be seen as an extension of the Superman mythos, but it grew into something more, something beyond what anybody could have expected. They became my friends, my secret crushes, my ciphers in a grander universe.

For as vast as the 30th and 31st centuries are, and despite the multitude of Legionnaires, I feel at home with them, and I know them intimately, even in the endless void of space.

We are The Legion, because The Legion is us- characters with flaws like ego (Brainiac 5) or misguided love interests (Invisible Kid) or even disabilities (Lightning Lad).

Regardless of the powers they have, or the adventures they go on, the real reason that I love The Legion is that they are real characters with absolutely no limits to where they can go in space, or in my heart.

Long Live The Legion.
