Art Institue of Zwen: Mike Grell

Another regular feature we are going to have here at Legion of Super Bloggers is The Art Institute of Zwen. This is where we will feature work we love. Sometimes it will be by established artists such as Dave Cockrum, James Sherman, or George Perez. Sometimes it will be independent artists we want to spotlight so we can help get the word out about.

This week we are featuring one of the best-known and greatest Legion artists, "Iron" Mike Grell.

Mike took the art job on Superboy in 1974 because he needed the job, not for any particular love of the characters. However,  in the unenviable position of having to follow fan-favorite Dave Cockrum, Grell took the Legion and for more than three years worked to make it his own. Besides the Legion he is famous for working on Green Lantern-Green Arrow and for creating The Warlord, Jon Sable, Freelance, and wrote Green Arrow for six years. Do you enjoy the TV-series ARROW? That's Mike Grell's GA costume design Oliver is wearing.
You can find Mike Grell at many conventions. He's fun to talk to and will do sketches for you for a price. His traveling schedule can be found here:

Or you can commission him to do original art here:

Long Live the Legion!

  1. This is beautiful, but.....(sigh) no Chemical King. :-(

  2. Chemical King is a favorite of mine just because of the way his powers are described in Who's Who. When I eventually read some of his appearances, I was less enthused.

  3. Yeah, CK was a sorely underutilized character. He's got a great power, but it's one that's pretty hard to illustrate. Other than Superboy #211 (illustrated by Mike Grell!) and Secret Origins #47, was he ever used effectively in story?

    1. Not really....he appeared in one or two ACTION COMICS stories, but not really doing anything. He was definitely a victim of his origin.

  4. Beautiful Supergirl.
    And great Action-y Wildfire!

    1. Supergirl is adorable here...and plenty hot when Grell actually drew her in a story.
However, "Action-y" is not a word. You meant "Action-ish", perhaps? ;-)
