LSH Cover to Cover 4: Curt Swan

Here's our fourth installment of our Legion of Super-Bloggers feature on all of the comic-book cover appearances of The Legion in chronological order.

Last time we went from Adventure Comics #321 to Adventure Comics #329, with a quick stop-off at Superboy #117. That brought us up to February 1965 and the debut of the Legion Flight Rings.

There was a definite "core" of Legionnaires by this point. Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5, and Colossal Boy appeared most often, with Lightning Lad, Mon-El, and Chameleon Boy featured prominently often, too. Surprisingly, Light Lass was on every cover from Adventure Comics #333 thru Adventure Comics #338. No other Legionnaire besides Superboy ever had that great a stretch.

We have included the Kid Psycho cover from Superboy #125 here, even though no other Legionnaires besides Superboy appear. Kid Psycho was from the future, he was a reserve Legionnaire, and the Legion appears in an important part of the story. We did NOT include Superboy #124, which is the debut of Lana Lang as Insect Queen, but did not feature any other Legionnaires...and besides, the cover spot was given to the Super-Baby story.

At this time all covers were still being pencilled by the late, great Curt Swan. Inking this time was all by George Klein.

This must have been another "gorilla" month at DC.

Dynamo Boy has destroyed the Legion,
so the LSV has to appear on the cover instead!

Adventure Comics #332
(May 1965)
pencils: Curt Swan
inks: George Klein
One of the most memorable LSH adventures.
Is that an unnamed space-man on the cover instead of Brainiac 5 or Sun Boy!?
No, it's actually Ultra Boy in a space-suit not in his traditional colors!

Adventure Comics #333
(June 1965)
pencils: Curt Swan
inks: George Klein
Believe it or not, this issue begins an unprecedented run
of SIX covers in a row for Light Lass.

Adventure Comics #334
(July 1965)
pencils: Curt Swan
inks: George Klein
Perpetual nominee for Stupidest Legion Story Ever.

Adventure Comics #335

Light Lass' 3rd cover in a row!

Adventure Comics #336
(Sept 1965)

Star Finger is revealed to be a Legionnaire...!

Adventure Comics #337
(Oct 1965)

Four Legionnaires quit to get married.....just kidding!
Brainiac 5 begins his term as Legion leader, though.

Adventure Comics #338
(Nov 1965)
pencils: Curt Swan
inks: George Klein
The Legion of Super Babies battles the Time Trapper----!?!

Superboy #125
(Dec 1965)
pencils: Curt Swan
inks: George Klein
I sincerely doubt anyone cheered OR cried when they read this story.

Adventure Comics #339
(Dec 1965)

Beast Boy from the Heroes of Lallor goes bad,
so Superboy and Mon-El have to tear each other's shirts off.

  1. Adventure 336, god! How much I loved this cover as a kid! It was the perfect roll call/face book of legionnaires, and on top of that, the Starfinger resolution. Good stuff.

Mind yout I'm oldish but not THAT old... you could get spanish language back issues on the cheap in the seventies with no fuzz

  2. The "unnamed spaceman" on the cover of Adventure #332 was Ultra Boy, who wore the spacesuit to protect himself in outer space while using his Ultra Powers to take on the Super Moby-Dick; it didn't work.

    1. A quick re-read of the story shows that you are correct! I've changed the caption, thanks!
