Legion Log
Yera is a member of the Durlan race of shape-changers, but she is almost unique in the fact that she was born on Earth, from immigrant parents. From an early age, she was entranced by theater and holofilm, and wanted to become an actress. But Durlans were barred by law from taking acting jobs, as their natural shape-changing abilities was considered an unfair advantage over other actors. After struggling in what work she did get, her big break came when she was approached by Imskian rebel Micro Lad, who told her that the Legionnaire Shrinking Violet would be working with them on a very secret mission. She was led to believe the Legionnaires could not know about Violet's absence, and was to impersonate Violet and take her place in the Legion until the end of that mission. In actuality, Violet had been kidnapped.
And so Yera-as-Violet served as a Legionnaire, participating in missions and falling in love with Colossal Boy (who had long had a crush on Violet) and marrying him. He thought his prayers answered, but clashed with Duplicate Boy, who had up to that point been Violet's long-distance boyfriend. Duplicate Boy soon relented, detecting Yera's deception, but thinking it part of Violet's plan, just as she did. His reaction nevertheless drew suspicion to Yera. Element Lad and officer Shvaughn Erin began quietly investigated her, and ultimately forced her to confess so they could free the real Violet. Though Colossal Boy was understandably shocked, his feelings for Yera remained true, and she was welcomed, as herself, in Gim and his family's hearts. The real Shrinking Violet was not so forgiving and it would take years before she would see it as water under the bridge (in the 5 Years Later time frame).
Yera does not appear in the Reboot or Threeboot.
After Infinite Crisis, Yera's original history has more or less been re-established. Tapped by Brainiac 5 to become a full Legion member and - against Colossal Boy's wishes - she took the name Chameleon Girl, and went undercover to infiltrate Earth Man's so-called "Justice League." She and Shrinking Violet remain at odds. She was one of the Legionnaires trapped in the 21st century while pursuing a time-traveling genetic terrorist. In Justice League United, she returns to the 31st century to once more serve with the team.

What was the year in which Action Comics #681 and Action Comics #683 were printed. I had lost track of of these two issues featuring Chameleon Girl. As always, thank you for the insight on the best comic genre ever.
ReplyDeleteThose comics came out in 2008.
ReplyDeleteThe first Vi/Yera confrontation was a real shining moment for Yera. She did not back down or even flinch at Vi's anger. No wonder Gim fell for her, she's tough!
ReplyDeleteI always liked Yera, so I wish we knew more about the circumstances where she joined the Legion.
ReplyDeleteClearly the "no duplication of powers" clause has been rescinded.
Technically he married her thinking she was an Imskian, but if he pointed that out he'd be splitting hairs, and then she'd think he preferred someone with hair.
