Happy Birthday, Dave Cockrum!

 

Today is the birthday of super fantastic "classic Legion" artist Dave Cockrum, born on this date in  1943.

Dave first entered the comics world by working at Warren doing Vampirella. He then became Murphy Anderson's background inker, a job that led directly to him taking over the back-up strip in Superboy. This was, of course, The Legion of Super-Heroes. After staying on that assignment for two years, Dave left DC to go to Marvel. He first worked on The Avengers before landing on The X-Men with Len Wein and Chris Claremont.

The rest, as they say, is history!
Sadly, Dave died of complications from diabetes in 2006.
