Who's Who: Quicksand

Quicksand
by Russell & Siskoid

Real Name: Anjelika Dugensa
Super-Power(s): Transforms solids into liquids and vice-versa
Planet of Origin: Earth
Relationship to Legion: Villain

Legion Log
Quicksand made her first appearance as an associate of the cosmic super-villain Pulsar Stargrave. She and Holdur were clearly already established as criminals of a certain level, as Stargrave trusted them to aid in his attempt to take over the universe. Their relationship was never specifically clarified, but it is clear from her dialogue with Stargrave and Holdur that she was a subordinate to the former and an equal to the latter.

Quicksand held her own against the Legion in their first meeting, using her ability to switch solids to liquids (and vice-versa) to contain several Legionnaires. In their second meeting, Saturn Girl was able to stop her with a mental attack.

Quicksand's history and real name were never explained in any actual story. Her origin reprinted here from Who's Who in The Legion is the only reference to it.

In the Reboot, Quicksand and Holdur were again partners, but she has different powers: Turning into a quicksand-like fluid. Working as assassins, they meddle in the affairs of the the twin planets of Dagosk and Dabron, and are apprehended by Leviathan and XS.

In the Threeboot, Quicksand does not appear to exist.

After Infinite Crisis, Quicksand's original history has presumably been more or less restored.

  1. While she seemed like a throw-away villain, I think she could have been used more often. IIRC, the person who killed the consul on asteroid 73-Q (in #298) was never solved (or at least told to the readers). Her powers could have done this easily - and made her a more interesting threat.

  2. I also was thinking that Saturn Girl using her power against Quicksand directly was upping the ante. If she retaliated in the future and used her powers directly against the legion instead of objects around them, she would kill them.

  3. I too would have liked these two to return, if only to establish in-canon their origins and their connection to Stargrave. Two very well designed bad guys who deserved better.
