Recap: Ig'nea and Stealth travelled to Mother-Beast, the creature who was caring for Stealth's baby. After retrieving the child, Ig'nea contacted L.E.G.I.O.N. and demanded that Dox turn himself over to her in exchange for the safety of his son. To convince him, she murdered Stealth in front of the team.

Dox accepted her demand and ordered the core team and new recruits to get ready to accompany him. On Batrok, the team attacked and eventually overcame Ig'nea's troops. Dox learned that Stealth was alive, although badly hurt. He found Ig'nea and she was about to unleash her pet beast on him when Stealth jumped in to fight it. The body of the cyborg, Darrius, was destroyed, but his head lived, and Amon swore they would find his maker so he could be repaired. Ignea surrounded Dox's child with flame and was flown away by one of her soldiers. Borbb was able to enter the flame and retrieve the child, which he gave to Dox. The team was fearful at first to see Dox with the boy, but he gave him over to his mother, Stealth, realizing it was for the best. Dox and Stealth appeared to finally achieve some sort of peace with one another.

(Last week, I covered the first half of this issue, which resolved our heroes fight against Vril Dox's former girlfriend, Ig'nea. We are now turning to the second story in this anniversary issue, which is a "What If?" style tale from Alan Grant and Denis Rodier. So lets skip the detailed recap of recent events and start off with the Forward to this story.)

Forward: It's not every day that monthly comic book science fiction adventures series reach their 50th issue. In honor of this auspicious event, we have dug through some of the DC Comics' archives and selected the following backup feature as a tale out of time.

It is unlikely that many current L.E.G.I.O.N. fans will recall this plucky, fun-loving group located somewhere between here and the Pre-Crisis DC Universe. In fact, some have said that such simple-hearted stories are not to the taste of today's sophisticated readers. To that we can only say, "Hey! You! Get offa my cloud!"

Recap: The gangster G'odd placed a mole in the L.E.G.I.O.N., and agents began to act more like villains than heroes. Phase attempted to deal with the blowback from member planets with no help from Vril Dox, who was focused on his romance with Ig'nea, one of the new recruits. Amid the chaos, Dox announced that he was disbanding the L.E.G.I.O.N. While the new recruits vowed to form their own organization to carry on the spirit of L.E.G.I.O.N., several of the core members came under attack while returning to base. Garv, Stealth, Telepath, and Captain Comet appeared near defeat but Comet let loose a burst of energy that knocked both them and their attackers unconscious. When they awoke, Telepath scanned one of their attackers and learned that G'odd was responsible. Meanwhile, Lady Quark, Bek, Marij'n, and Phase fended off an attack on Cairn, while Lobo recovered from his own defeat at the hands of the assassin Ice Man. Meanwhile, Dox and Ig'nea travelled to meet her father, who turned out to be the villain G'odd. Dox later observed Ig'nea murdering her gardner and began to suspect things may not be as they same. He eventually realized that he had been manipulated and started to formulate a plan.

Lobo was on a mission attacking G'odd's smugglers and fell into a trap set by the assassin Ice Man, who leaves Lobo buried in a grave. Despite the team's troubles, everyone was still shocked when Dox gathered them to announce that he was disbanding the L.E.G.I.O.N. The new recruits vowed to form their own organization to carry on the spirit of L.E.G.I.O.N. while several of the core members came under attack while returning to base. Garv, Stealth, Telepath, and Captain Comet appeared to fall in defeat. On Cairn, Phase tried to deal with the fallout of Dox's decision, while Garryn Bek surprisingly stepped up and held the organization together amid the fallout. Lady Quark expressed her desire to leave since Dox was no longer a potential mate, but Phase and Bek convinced her to stay and fight for the team. Meanwhile, Dox and Ig'nea travelled to meet her father, who turned out to be the villain G'odd.

She struggled with the decision because she believed Dox resented her for the Durlan's disappearance, but ultimately she accepted. Strata welcomed a team of new recruits, which included a Khund and Lydea Mallor, who had killed her mother while under the influence of the Computer Tyrants of Colu. Meanwhile, the gangster G'odd was furious that one of his shipments was stopped by Lobo under the orders of Dox, but we learn that he has planted a spy among the L.E.G.I.O.N. Lobo lost his temper and stormed out to a bar where he met Captain Marvel, who had been transported into space as a result of the War of the Gods crossover. Before their battle could be concluded, the Captain found himself once again transported away. Stealth also returned after the birth of her and Dox's child, and Dox was anxious to learn the fate of their child. Meanwhile, the team has welcomed a new round of recruits.

Recap: The L.E.G.I.O.N. successfully captured a doomsday device being built by the Khunds to use in their war against the Dominion. It turned out that there was a flaw in the device, but Dox kept that to himself and used it to force the Dominion and Khunds to stop using free worlds in their war. Stealth continued her exile and gave birth to a son, but the experience almost killed her. Dox sent Lobo to deal with some smugglers and freed Lydea Mallor from the brainwashing that led her to kill her mother, Lyrissa Mallor. He then asked Phase to take over for Lyrissa as his second-in-command. She was shocked at the offer since she believed Dox resented her for the Durlan's disappearance, but she did accept.

The team successfully captured both the design plans and the weapon, but the captured scientist was killed. Dox then staffed the doomsday device with a crew from the planet Ogen and placed it in a location where it could strike at either Khundia or the Dominion if they tried to involve any more free worlds in their war. Meanwhile, Stealth continued her self-imposed exile. The birth of her child virtually tore her body apart, but the remains formed a cocoon from which she emerged in a new body. We learned that her violent attack on Dox is the natural manner for her race to reproduce and the men usually do not survive. We also learned that the women usually do not survive giving birth, but Stealth is revealed to be a mutant of her species. The child she delivered is a son and his physical appearances matches his father, Vril Dox.

Recap: After the death of Lyrissa Mallor, Dox turned his attention to the menace of the Khundian Empire. The L.E.G.I.O.N. freed the planet Ogen from being terrorized by the Khunds and Telepath discovered from a prisoner that they were using a captured scientist to build a Doomsday weapon. The team tried to use a captured Khund craft to gain admittance to where the device was being built but the plan failed. Most of the team fled the craft using escape pods but Lady Quark and Bek remained behind in hopes that the pods would confuse Khundian radar.

Back on Cairn, Captain Comet and Marij'n have grown disturbed by the experiments that Dox is conducting on Lydia Mallor to deprogram her. Particularly worried that Dox will use the enhanced charisma mode that he used on the Coluans, they have gone to confront him.

Recap: After the death of Lyrissa Mallor, Dox used her memory to inspire the L.E.G.I.O.N. He also decided to direct their attention towards a new menace, the Khundian Empire, which is at war with the Dominion. He answered a call for help from the planet Ogen, which was being terrorized by the Khunds. They freed the planet but this was just a first step in confronting their empire. Meanwhile, Marij'n was horrified to discover the experiments that Dox was performing on Lydea Mallor to free her from the Computer Tyrant's brainwashing.

Recap: The fate of the Durlan was finally revealed and we learned that when he disappeared he was transported to the 30th century. He found a universe no more welcoming to his people than it was in his own time, so he took a human disguise. After pondering his history as Brainiac's prisoner, and the somewhat twisted relationship he developed with Vril Dox after he was "freed" by Dox, the Durlan decided that his friend's dream of forming the L.E.G.I.O.N. was a noble one. In his guise of R.J. Brande, he planned to continue that dream by creating a Legion of his own in the 30th century. 

Back in the 20th Century, while the team dealt with the death of Lyrissa Mallor, Vril Dox decided that the team needed to turn its attention to another menace facing the universe, the Khundian Empire.

Recap: After Lyrissa Mallor was murdered by her brainwashed daughter, Bek and Marij'n travelled to Talk VIII seeking revenge against the Computer Tyrants. The Tyrants, still in the powerful body they created after fleeing their earlier battle with the L.E.G.I.O.N., had been trying to become the planet's new champion, Mr. Starr. The battle was not going well until the rest of the team arrived, and the combined power of Lady Quark, Bek and Marij'n was able to turn the tide against Mr. Starr. But in the aftermath of the battle, Bek and Marij'n are horrified to discover that the Emerald Eye, the source of their power, has disappeared. During this same time, Stealth has fled Cairn and found a distant planet to await the birth of her child.

Recap: Lyrissa Malor is dead. The heart of the team has been murdered by her own daughter. The one person who could temper Vril Dox's dark side and keep the team united in the face of his more cold-blooded tendencies is gone. Brainwashed by the Computer Tyrants of Colu, her daughter Lydea was convinced her mother was evil and had to be destroyed. The last issue ended with a vision of Lyrissa passing away, but some readers likely hoped it was misleading and she would recover. That was not to be.
