Let’s rewind back to the first Saturday of May, 2018. On a whim, I picked up Dark Horse Comics’
Overwatch issue. Flipping through it I skimmed and found the
“Black Hammer” back-up feature created and
written by Jeff Lemire.
I’d only briefly heard of “Black Hammer,” and still have barely an idea of what “Black
Hammer” is about. Yet imagine my surprise when I realized the story I
was reading was about the Legion of Super-Heroes!
Or rather, the Black Hammer version of the Legion!
For those who remember, Lemire used the Legion in the New 52’s Justice League Canada/United. It featured a Legion that seemed to be based off the Retroboot/New 52
iteration, but jammed with Legionnaires from the FYL and Reboot eras. The story was, to me at least, a disappointment. I already had zero interest in
JLU because Green Arrow was a member and I HATE HIM!! I’m sick of
being expected to support books with characters I loathe just to get the Legion
back.
But I digress.
Giving the FCBD issue a careful read, it became obvious Lemire intended to invoke the Legionnaires. It’s a short tale and most
of it hypes the main “Black Hammer” universe with the Quantum League as a framing device.
However, the end promised more of the Quantum
League in their own ongoing! I got excited wondering what
would happen next. Why is it I’m having more fun enjoying Lemire doing a Legion
homage than when he wrote about the actual Legion? Read on and find out.

Synopsis:
This final chapter of the Infinitus Saga picks up where part
5 left off. The combined forces of the Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice
League have successfully defeated Byth’s forces, but with no Infinitus to
absorb the payload of Brainiac-5’s bomb, a black hole is ripped open in the
fabric of space. The black hole threatens to absorb not only the Legion and
Justice League United forces, but also the planet of Thanagar!
But Brainiac-5, with the help of Dream Girl’s precognition
powers, quickly determines a course of action for fixing Brainy’s catastrophic
mistake. He quickly has Sardath summon the warships of Rann, all equipped with
Zeta Beam technology. With the combined might of 500 Rann Warships and White
Witch’s magical powers, they are able to successfully transport Thanagar free
from the gravity of the black hole and position it closely to Rann.

Synopsis:
This issue opens with Dream Girl, still in the future that is currently being decimated by Infinitus, reflecting on how the Legion was founded. Notice here that she mentions the actions of the Justice League as the inspiration for Brande's founding of the Legion, and not Superman, as was the case in the past iterations. Dream Girl is the leader of the team of Legionnaires that stayed in the 31st Century battling Infinitus, while Brainiac's team went into the past to prevent Ultra the Multi-Alien from ever evolving into the evil entity. Dream Girl determines that Earth, the galaxy, and the entire universe are lost unless Infinitus is stopped in the 21st Century, and so after the Legion evacuates more Earth cities, they regroup at the Time Institute and head back in time to join the others (and the Justice League United.) But their arrival is too late. Byth once again wins out in an astral conversation between Byth, Martian Manhunter, and Ultra, while Hawkman (still under the control of Byth) delays the combined JLU and Legion forces enough for Byth's ship to enter the Event Horizon, resulting in the birth of INFINITUS...
Thoughts:
If you notice from the heading, this Infinitus Saga has now been inflated from 5 parts (4 regular size issues plus a double sized annual) into 6 chapters. And man does it show in this issue. This comic literally took me three minutes to read. The comic costs more than a $1 a minute. I have gradually increased my complaints of the decompressed story tropes creeping into this story arc with each passing chapter, but the plot progression grinds to a complete standstill in this issue. Where did the character beats and the plot progression from the annual go? I had so much praise for Lemire's writing on that annual, but this story arc has grown stagnant and devoid of those high points with each passing issue until it completely disappears in this issue.
The art is gorgeous to look at, but that's just it, it is just art to look at. With this issue being so light on the plot, there isn't much of a story to even elaborate on or add to in the art. The comic features 22 pages. Of those 22 pages, there are 4 double-page splashes (so that's a consumption of 8 pages) plus 2 single page splashes, and several 2 page panels consisting of half page splashes. Like I said, the art looks great, the detail in the art is really stepped up, but there is just no plot or story here. Unfortunately I think next issue will be more of the same, until we get to the final chapter. It is really too bad, the story started out at such a high pace, and was the perfect balance of action, plot development, and character beats. But the last 2 pages have been nothing but splash pages of the combined super teams flying in space. It looks like this one would have been a better fit for a 2-3 issue story, I can't imagine that the decompressed story format that resulted in the "filler" from these past 2 issues is going to hold up much better in the trade. It'll end up being about 40 pages of stagnant story, but I guess those 40 pages will only take about 10 minutes to breeze through. Like I said, top notch art, it's really pretty to look at, it's just too bad there isn't a better story to accompany it.
The issue ends with the reveal of Infinitus on the final splash page, and the text on the page still indicates that the next issue should be the final chapter. However the double page splash that serves as the title page calls out this chapter as part 4 of 6. We'll see if the final battle does in fact take place next issue as the final page promises, or if that conclusion is spread out over the next two issues. Two more issues would carry the series until March, leading into the two month break for Convergence, it will be interesting to see if the conclusion has an impact on the greater DCU and if it serves (one of) the causes for the Convergence Event.

Synopsis:The story opens where the last issue left off, the JLU are on the moon Ryngor in the Polaris system battling the storm of energy beings that Bythe has just unleashed on the Universe. But luckily for the JLU, the members of the Legion Lost team have joined the fray and come to their aid. Black Mass teleports Ultra back to Byth’s inner temple while Byth attacks Dawnstar and the other Legionnaires. Just as it looks like the heroes are about to be overwhelmed, they are transported to safety on Rann, where the other members of the team reside. Brainiac-5 informs them that once Sardath was able to get through the interference caused by the cosmic storm of energy beings that Byth released, they were able to lock onto their position and teleport them to safety. The team regroups and introductions are made while Martian Manhunter tries to telepathically contact Ultra the Multi-Alien. As Manhunter and Ultra converse telepathically, Byth hijacks their astral chat and kicks Martian Manhunter out of Ultra’s mind. Martian Manhunter reveals to the team that all they thought they knew about Byth was wrong, and that he is much more powerful than they ever dreamed. After a little more discussion, the members of the Legion and Justice League United teams agree to re-enter the fray and try to put an end to Byth’s plan once and for all.
Meanwhile, Byth and Hawkman prepare a ship to take Ultra
close to the black hole where Byth’s forces are pouring out. Once in position,
they can take the final steps to Ultra’s evolution into Infinitus, and bring
about the end of everything. And that is where they meet the combined forces of
our assembled heroes. However, in a final ominous splash page, our heroes are told
by an armored Hawkman that they are too late, for “THE END IS HERE.” To be
continued...!
Closing Thoughts:
The story really comes to a screeching halt in this issue. Not a lot happens this issue, and the result is a very short $3.99 read. The art is very good and pretty to look at, very detailed and action
packed. It feels like it was stepped up a bit since last issue. That may be in
part due to the additional inking support provided by Keith Champagne, an
industry mainstay for the last 20 years and one of my personal favorite inkers
of the modern era of comics. There is a lot of action in this issue but not a
whole lot of plot development or story. The issue opens a midst a battle, the
heroes are temporarily teleported out of battle to safety, they regroup, then
they teleport back in. Throw in a reveal of Byth being more powerful than they
imagined, and you pretty much nailed all that happens as far as moving the
story along. It's great to see the Legion Lost cast of characters back in action, but what started off as a plot and character driven mystery surrounding, Ultra, Byth, and his Cult has become a casualty of the "write for the trade" story.

Synopsis:
Picking up the story where Part One left off at the conclusion of the Justice League United Annual, we find the JLU team fighting on two fronts. Martian Manhunter, Equinox, Alanna, and the members of the Legion of Super-Heroes (Mon-El, Brainianc 5, Saturn Girl, and Phantom Girl) are on Earth fighting the team of mercenaries known as The Cadre, sent by Byth to capture Ultra the Multi-Alien. Meanwhile, on Rann's moon of Ryngor, the other members of the JLU Supergirl, Green Arrow, Animal Man, and Stargirl square off against Byth's cult forces, including a resurrected and brain-washed Hawkman. Just as it looks as if the JLU and Legion teams are getting the upper hand on both fronts, Cadre member Overmaster learns the location of Ultra from a telepathic attack from Saturn Girl. He alerts his teammate Black Mass, who quickly teleports to where Ultra is hidden. Black Mass quickly captures both Ultra and his JLU guardian Equinox. He teleports to Byth's location on Rygnor before Martian Manhunter, Mon-El, and Phantom Girl can stop him. Speaking of Byth, he and Hawkman have held off Supergirl and the other JLU members long enough to unleash a massive energy force made up of demonic hard light constructs. These quickly attack the regrouped JLU team. The Earth-bound members of the JLU and Legion contact Rann and scientist Sardath, hoping he can teleport them to the moon in time to save Ultra. However, he is unable to calibrate the Zeta Beam to the moon's coordinates due to the energy disturbance from Byth's new army. Just as all hope looks lost, Brainiac 5 comes through, informing the JLU that he's called in his own team for back-up, the so-called Legion Lost!
Thoughts:
This is a pretty action-packed issue. The entire comic is devoted to continuing the battles started in the last half of the Annual, Part One of the story. Really the only character development in the issue occurs between Ultra and new team member Equinox on the first two pages of the story. The art is very clean and is the pretty typical current DC house style. There is a lot of negative space in a number of panels. The art team that tackled the first part of the story in the Annual put in much more detail in the background that what is in part two in this issue. The few panels that do flesh out some of the background have story errors in them. For example, the title page, which is on the third page of the issue, shows the combined Legion and JLU team fighting the Cadre on Earth. The problem is that Supergirl is included in this otherwise gorgeous splash page, despite actually being in a different star system and fighting Byth while this battle on Earth is taking place.
These nitpicks aside, the story is still interesting and engaging, and I'm very excited with the cliffhanger introducing the Legion Lost to the fray. The issue isn't as strong as the Annual was in the plot, characterization, or art department, but it moves the story forward and I'm looking forward to seeing where this 5-Parter is going to lead.

Synopsis:
The issue opens in Moosonee, Canada with Mon-El confronting Martian Manhunter, leader of the Justice League United, who has under his protection the child known as Ultra the Multi-Alien. Mon-El reveals that he has traveled across space and time to destroy the child, and if he fails the Legion of Super-Heroes will die. Martian Manhunter and Mon-El square off in a super-powered battle while JLU members Equinox and Alanna Strange protect the child. J’onn reveals that he has no idea who Mon-El is or who the Legion of Super-Heroes are, but he will die before allowing harm to come to Ultra. Mon-El quick dispatches Martian Manhunter while Alanna switches places on Rann with her husband Adam Strange. Equinox temporarily subdues Mon-El, giving her just enough time to inform Adam Strange that the rest of the JLU is in space assisting Hawkman. Adam Strange mentions that he thought Hawkman was dead, just as Mon-El breaks free and informs them that he is sorry, but he has no other choice.
Jump to the Polaris Star System where the other members of the Justice League United team, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Animal Man, and Stargirl are searching for someone amidst the Plexus-6 Pleasure Station Casino & Brothel. Green Arrow mentions once again that Hawkman died and that they are searching for whoever stole his Justice League Transmitter. Supergirl plays bad cop and starts a brawl with the alien riff-raff aboard the space station until they flush out the small alien who has Hawkman’s JLU Transmitter. The small alien, that according to Animal Man “looks like an Ewok,” reveals that he got the Transmitter in a trade with a Khundian Merc co-worker. He claims the mercenary liberated the Transmitter from a temple on the Thanagarian moon Ryngor, where Hawkman’s body is in the possession of a cult led by Byth.
Back on Earth, Adam and Alanna Strange once again swap places on Rann mid conversation with Mon-El, distracting him just enough to allow the Martian Manhunter to knock him out. Just as J’onn begins to read Mon-El’s mind, Brainiac-5, Phantom Girl, and Saturn Girl intervene. Cooler heads prevail, and Brainiac 5 proceeds with a history lesson of what the Legion of Super-Heroes is, where/when they come from, and divulge the terrible tale of the planet-destroying entity known as Infinitus. Brainy recounts how the massive being Infinitus arose out of a cosmic doorway in the Polaris system, doing his best Galactus impersonation and swallowing up Thanagar and Psion, and in doing so, slaying billions. The Legion and United Planets scrambled to stop the monster before he engulfs his next target, Rann. Brainy was able to identify and match Infinitus’ unique time energy signature to that of Ultra the Multi-Alien, and now he along with Mon-El, Phantom Girl, and Saturn Girl have ventured to the past to stop Ultra.

Meanwhile, the other members of the JLU have called in a favor to Sardath of Rann, who has used Rann’s Zeta-Beam technology in conjunction with Stargirl’s staff to transport the team to the Thanagarian moon Ryngor. As Buddy Baker makes a long distance phone call home to his wife to tell her he won’t be home for dinner, Byth subdues Supergirl and Green Arrow before confronting the rest of the JLU team with his loyal soldier…Hawkman! Alive and in the flesh!
Back on Earth in the Great White North, Brainiac 5 finishes his tale and informs Martian Manhunter that he has allowed them 24 hours to determine how or why Ultra is fated to become Infinitus, and prevent it, or the other members of the Legion will join their comrades in the past, and together destroy Ultra the Multi-Alien in order to save the lives of billions in the future. Just as Brainy provides Martian Manhunter with this ultimatum, their conversation is interrupted by a distressed Green Arrow, who warns Martian Manhunter that Byth is involved and that he wants Ultra, and that Hawkman is alive, before having his transmission cut off when the battle resumes on Ryngor. Byth rambles on about being the master manipulator and having planned everything, including every step the JLU has made since being founded, and creating Ultra, all to usher in the “True New Universe” and finally break the paradox loop. His agents confront the Legion and remaining cast of the JLU on Earth as the issue closes with Byth’s promise “I performed the ceremony right before you arrived…it’s too late to stop now! I have opened time and space. And soon, from that remarkable child…Infinitus will be born!”
To be continued in Justice League United #6!
Closing Thoughts:
The issue, like all annuals, carries an extended page count, and despite a couple of full page splashes and two page spreads, the story is fairly dense and a hearty read. It has a lot of the aesthetic that make a Legion comic great: Time Travel Paradoxes, a do or die situation, a plethora of alien worlds, a little mystery, and a whole lot of action. I have not been following Justice League United at all, but Lemire does a great job of cuing new readers into what is going on, and has some really nice character moments that establishes the dynamic between certain team members really well. Green Arrow is the leader, Supergirl is a hot head and who hasn’t yet embraced the role of team member, and Martian Manhunter is a force to be reckoned with as a worthy toe-to-toe foe of the very powerful Daxamite Mon-El. In Brainiac 5’s account of the destruction Infinitus wreaks on Thanagar and Psion we get to see a ton of Legionnaires in action including Star Boy, Phantom Girl, Element Lad, White Witch, Lightning Lad, Shadow Lass, Blok, Bouncing Boy, Duo Damsel, Shrinking Violet, Lightning Lass, Ultra Boy, and more. The story is an enjoyable read, and very well paced, hats off to Jeff Lemire. He did a great job of transitioning back and forth between the two groups of characters in the story, and starts the issue off with a bang. He does a great job of mixing action, plot development, and character moments throughout the story. The art is hit-and-miss at times, but it is a whole lot more hit than miss.
During my first reading of the story, I had one sticking point with the writing, and it was with the characterization of Mon-El. After seeing his growth and development as a more level-headed and poised character during the New Krypton Saga and Adventure Comics/Legion of Super-Heroes volume 6 pre-New 52, I was thinking as I read along that it was a little disappointing to see him reduced to the “angry powerful guy.” However, it is revealed later in the story that this seething anger results from him believing that Shadow Lass had died at the hands of Infinitus. She didn’t and this revelation relieves a lot of his blind rage. So one of my initial complaints ended up being an even greater appreciation of Lemire’s great grasp on the characters. I really enjoyed his little Star Wars reference, it’s small, but a nice little nod to pop culture, something that used to be really prevalent in comics during the 70’s and 80’s and is few and far between nowadays.
Most of the art is well proportioned and very detailed with interesting and engaging panel layouts, which really overshadow the few stiff panels and occasional wonky anatomy instances (Martian Manhunter’s fists). Edwards and Leisten do a pretty solid job of capturing emotions with their face expressions during the character beat segments of the story. I’m not real familiar with either one of their past work, but I am disappointed that they won’t be the team on the art duties for part 2 of the story. They really seem to have a grasp on the Legion cast and bring a lot of excitement and enthusiasm in their approach to bringing the characters to life with their art. There have been rumblings of DC about to have another Universe ending or expanding event in the vein of a “Crisis” level event, most people believe that will be spinning out of Future’s End. It will be interesting to see if this Infinitus Saga will just simply be a 5 part self-contained story, or if its resultant ramifications will contribute to this upcoming shake-up of the DC Universe.

Legion to appear in new Justice League United story!
Great news! The Legion are making their way back to comics!
Not so great news. Rather than headlining their own book, they'll appear as part of a Justice League United story line. Specifically a story entitled "The Infinitus Saga," contained within Justice League United Annual #1 and Justice League United #6-#10.
Well... we're not getting our own new monthly series yet, but I suppose we should be happy we're getting any new Legion comics!
The announcement came some time ago, sorry for just getting around to sharing it here. Below you'll find the cover and solicitation.
Fingers crossed that "The Infinitus Saga" leads to a new ongoing series for our favorite future super-stars!
Long Live the Legion!

The Infinitus Saga continues as a displaced Legion of Super-Heroes tries to prevent the destruction of the 31st century by killing Ultra the Multi Alien! Complicating matters is the fact that Multi is a young innocent in the current time period, forcing the Justice League United to stand in the Legion’s way!
The new piece to this story is the "Channel 52" article posted last week discussing the Legion appearance in greater detail. If you don't read contemporary comics, "Channel 52" is a weekly in-house promotional ad appearing in each issue of DC Comics. Sort of like the Bronze Age "Daily Planet" pages for you old fogeys. :)
Here is the important bit...
"... As the 31st century starts collapsing, the Legion travels back in time to the current time, Terminator-style, to prevent this catastrophe from happening. Unfortunately, to do that, the Legion must kill a child. And standing in their way is our li'l ol' JL United team!"Seems likely the collapsing of the 31st century may have something to do with the current story in The New 52 - Futures End. In fact, be sure to pick up last week's Justice League United: Futures End #1 for an appearance by Dawnstar!
Fingers crossed that "The Infinitus Saga" leads to a new ongoing series for our favorite future super-stars!
Long Live the Legion!
