Who's Who: Monstress

Monstress
by Siskoid

Real Name: Candi Pyponte-LeParc III
Super-Power(s): Super-strength and invulnerability, adrenaline boost.
Planet of Origin: Xanthu
Legion Seniority: Monstress was the fifth completely new Legion recruit after the Reboot.

Legion Log
Candi Pyponte-Le Parc III was born into elite society on the planet Xanthu, pampered and wanting for nothing. She knew nothing of working class life until her father took her on a tour of one of his plants, where she saw impoverished laborers, one of whom ran up to them, threatening to detonate a bomb. Her father swatted him aside and in doing so, the gene bomb detonated. Candi took the blast full-on and was disfigured, turned into the green hulking monster later known as Monstress.

Monstress joined Xanthu's super group, the Uncanny Amazers, the only place she was not branded an outcast. She first met the Legionnaires when the two groups were asked to engage in a friendly competition, and later teamed up against Mordru. So impressed with them, she quit her team to join theirs.

At one point, by chance, Element Lad altered Monstress' body chemistry and changed her skin color from green to orange without her consent. She was enraged until Jan pointed out that she could now buy an entirely new wardrobe to complement the hue.

Following the Blight's attack on Earth, Monstress became one of ten Legionnaires who disappeared into a rift in space and wandered across an entire second galaxy until they discovered that their former teammate Element Lad had become a genocidal monster called the Progenitor. She tried to reach out to him, to appeal to the old, sensitive Jan Arrah she loved, and was repaid with a swift death. When the Legionnaires returned home, they held a memorial for the both of them.

After the Threeboot, Monstress does not seem to exist.

After Infinite Crisis, it is not clear whether Monstress exists, though the one from the Reboot timeline does join the three Legions to fight Superboy-Prime's new Legion of Super-Villains, but after Flashpoint, she is seen as one of the Legion's younger members.

  1. Did the reboot not have the unique power requirement? If they did, how did she get in?

  2. I think the only requirement was one per UP planet, and that went away after they arrested President Chu.

  3. LLM is right. There was a "one member per planet" clause in the original set-up. When they became more autonomous they had a clause in their constitution "encouraging a diversity of powers in the membership" but no requirement for unique abilities.

  4. The caption from LSH 102 says they found Computo's invasion, but it was actually part of a Dark Circle plan to stage an attack by some other aliens (I can't remember if they were ever identified or not) so that the Khunds could stage a rescue. Computo only showed up in the reboot series when some of the Legionnaires were trapped in the twentieth century.

  5. Remember it was "Each member had to have a super power that no one else possessed" for diversify but Superboy, Supergirl and Mon-El could all be Legionnaire's because " They're special " then both Lightning Lad and Lightning Lass, Ferro Lad , Blok , all of whom have similar abilities to members already on the team but allowed to join anyway !

When ERG -1 tried to join he was quickly shown the door because he could duplicate like ten different members powers and it was a bad thing ! ( Thanks Cary Bates)
