Who's Who: Rond Vidar

Rond Vidar
by Russell & Siskoid

Legion Log
Rond Vidar met the Legion when his invention, a cube-shaped time machine, won the Metropolis Students' Science Fair first place award as judged by a group of Legionnaires. They then took advantage of his device, traveling into the past to follow a new enemy named Universo. Rond was able to monitor the Legionnaires via his device and rescue them from Universo's death-traps. After Universo was apprehended, Rond revealed to the Legionnaires that Universo was his father. Oddly enough, Rond's name was not mentioned in this first appearance.

Somewhat later, when President Boltax outlawed the Legion and all of Earth turned against them, he kidnapped Rond. He was able to break free from the President's clutches, however, and help the Legion free Earth from his control. It was then revealed that President Boltax was secretly Rond's father, Universo. For Rond's efforts he was awarded Honorary Legion membership.

Rond continued his undergraduate studies, including an experiment with a hyper-time drive equipped time machine which he hoped to use to prove time has a circular flow. Unfortunately, this experiment ended with the mutation of Professor Jaxon Rugarth into the Infinite Man. Working with Brainiac 5 and the other Legionnaires, Rond trapped Rugarth in a repeating cycle of time until they could free and cure him.

Rond continued his experiments into time travel, and could always be called upon to help when the Legion had a time travel problem. Meanwhile, he graduated and started working at the Time Institute in Metropolis.

It was at the Time Institute that Rond became one of the few citizens on Earth who was cognizant of "the Crisis." During his and the Legion's efforts to protect the United Planets from the anti-matter wave sweeping the universe, they inadvertently freed the Infinite Man from his prison in time. This time, the White Witch was able to cure Professor Rugarth, but his human consciousness was gone.

When Universo tried again to take over Earth, he targeted his son as one of the impediments to his success. Universo ordered an assassin to kill Rond, who was fatally injured when the roof of the Time Institute fell on him. Universo's controlled doctor then sabotaged Rond's healing, and he appeared to succumb to his injuries.

In actuality, Rond was a Green Lantern, and his power ring protected him from mortal harm. Rond faked his death and went into hiding, intending to regain his strength and eventually face his father again. However, the Legion led by Saturn Girl, were able to defeat Universo, so Rond remained hidden, recuperating.

Sensor Girl eventually came to him, asking for his help in the Legion's battle against the Time Trapper. Rond not only helped Brainiac 5 complete their modified time machine, he went with the Legion to battle the Time Trapper at the end of time. Rond revealed himself to be a Green Lantern, and triggered Professor Rugarth to become the Infinite Man again. The Infinite Man and the Time Trapper then ended up destroying each other. With the crisis over, Rond left Earth, choosing to follow the UP edict banning Green Lanterns from Earth.

During the so-called Five Year Gap, after the economy of the United Planets collapsed, Rond worked to protect the sector against the encroaching Khunds. He fought alongside the former Legionnaire Laurel Gand, and the two eventually fell in love. They had a child, named Lauren after Laurel's mother. Before he could enjoy fatherhood, he joined the Legion to rescue former Legionnaire Mysa Nal from Mordru. Mordru was too powerful for him; the wizard stripped Rond of his Green Lantern armor and crushed it. He was then tortured by Mordru for several months before he was finally rescued by the Legion, after which he adopted the role of househusband while Laurel fought Khunds, went on missions with the Legion, and proved very handy to have around headquarters. Sadly, Laurel died saving Weber's World from the Khunds forcing him to raise Lauren alone. He would be the first to detect the crisis event known as Zero Hour, and so his Laurel-less timeline soon collapsed.

In the Reboot, Rond Vidar was a friend of Brainiac 5's when they studied together at the Time Institute, and later worked often with the Legion as an adviser on temporal matters. He was, among other things, involved in regressing Lori Morning back to her true physical age, something she did not appreciate in the least, and established contact with time-lost Legionnaires when several were sent to the 20th Century by Emerald Vi. In this continuity, he did not become a Green Lantern (or Darkstar), and was not, so far as we know, the son of Universo.

Rond Vidar does not appear in the Threeboot.

After Infinite Crisis, Rond Vidar's original history has presumably been more or less restored. During the so-called Final Crisis, Rond was killed by Superboy-Prime during a rescue mission to save Mysa Nal on Sorcerers' World. Universo was present, but did not prevent it, hungering to get the Green Lantern ring back. Instead, it returned to Oa, where the Legionnaires later would bury Rond.

  1. I really like Rond as a character, and all the soapiness of the Brainy/Lauren/Rond triangle was golden.
If only Legion of Three Worlds didn't exist...

  2. I never noticed how much Rond looked like a young Dick Grayson early on. Weird.

And does anyone like Superboy Prime (the "current" version) besides Geoff Johns? The most petulant comic character ever? I know that's kind of the point, but he belabored it to DEATH. Literally.
