Who's Who: Omega

Omega
by Russell & Siskoid

Real Name: Omega
Super-Power(s): Destructive energy being
Planet of Origin: None
Relationship to Legion: Opponent

Legion Log
Omega appeared suddenly on the outskirts of the known universe, claiming to be the living embodiment of anger, discontent, and fear. It was clearly heading towards Earth, so the Legion attempted to stop it. They failed, and it arrived on Earth having defeated the majority of Legionnaires.

On Earth, the remaining Legionnaires learned that Brainiac 5, suffering from mental illness, had created Omega via the Miracle Machine. They were able to convince Brainiac 5 to destroy his creation. To do so, he had former Legionnaire Matter-Eater Lad consume the Miracle Machine, which made Omega cease to exist.

The more logical course of action would have been to use the Miracle Machine to wish Omega out of existence.  However that either didn't seem to have been possible, or the idea did not occur to anyone.

Although Omega appeared to have caused untold damage to the city of Metropolis, and Wildfire destroyed the Legion headquarters in his attempt to stop it, no one seemed to have been fatally injured.

Over the years, Omega became a reason for the public to be suspicious of the Legion, despite being reliant on them for defense, but it never reappeared. In the Five Years Later era, it was revealed that Glorith was behind the madness of Brainiac 5 that brought Omega into being.

Omega existed in neither the Reboot nor the Threeboot.

After Infinite Crisis, Omega's original history has presumably been more or less restored.

  1. Omega was the first Legion villian I ever encountered when reading comics. I thought he was an awesome badass, but didn't understand why. I subsequently have discovered how lame his story is.

20 years later, the Glorith interpretation made it better. But, Omega is still a badly handled concept.
